Discover why entrepreneurship education is key for the future. From Gen Z to over-50s, entrepreneurs are making waves, saving the planet—and making us laugh!
In a world where the only thing constant is change—and probably your Wi-Fi password—we need entrepreneurs more than ever.
As the global economy moves faster than your smartphone’s screen refresh rate, it's clear that we all need to step up our game.
But how do we prepare the next generation for a future that's as unpredictable as a viral TikTok dance?
Easy: entrepreneurship education.
The Call for an Upgrade in Education
In June 2022, 164 of the sharpest minds in the business world—aka the cool kids who run the world—signed an open letter calling for a complete overhaul of entrepreneurship education.
The letter was clear: we can’t just keep teaching kids to solve for x (spoiler: x is always “unknown”) while ignoring real-world problems like, say, building an app that lets you pay your rent with dogecoin.
The letter suggested mixing entrepreneurship into subjects like Maths, English, and Design, so kids don’t just ask, “When will I ever use this in real life?” They’ll be too busy planning their million-dollar startup to even care.
And to make this dream a reality, the letter also called for a network of entrepreneurs to act as role models.
Because let’s face it—if I have to listen to another "This is my 10th startup" story on a Zoom call, I need a mentor too.
Entrepreneurship: It’s Not Just for the Young!
But wait, it's not just the fresh-faced 20-somethings hustling in Silicon Valley. According to recent studies, people over 54 are getting in on the action.
That’s right—50 is the new 30 in entrepreneurship.
A Financial Times article revealed that more than 40% of these wise individuals are starting businesses, proving that it’s never too late to make your mark in the world.
Plus, they’ve probably got enough life experience to know that the secret to success isn’t just working hard—it’s working smarter... and with coffee that's at least 50% stronger than your average brew.
Youth Entrepreneurs: Saving the Planet and Your Wallet
Meanwhile, young entrepreneurs are out here saving the world, one start-up at a time.
They’re not just solving problems—they’re taking over the planet!
Take Africa’s youth entrepreneurs, for example.
Thanks to initiatives like the Tony Elumelu Foundation, they’re generating revenue, creating jobs, and even tackling climate change—all while using minimal Wi-Fi bandwidth.
Some of them are basically the Avengers of the business world, minus the capes (though, I’d totally buy a “Green Energy Entrepreneur” action figure if they made one).
Closing Thoughts
If there's one thing that’s clear, it’s that we need to equip the next generation with entrepreneurship skills, preferably while injecting some much-needed humour into the mix. With the right tools, the next big idea could come from anyone: the high schooler who just figured out how to make a fortune from viral videos or the 60-year-old techie who’s finally taking the plunge into the startup world. No matter your age, the future of business is brighter when you can laugh along the way. So, let’s keep encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit. And who knows? Maybe the next Zuckerberg or Musk will be laughing all the way to the bank. And let’s hope they use a Wi-Fi password we can all remember.
